It all started in US when 'Rent the Runaway' has made high end fashion as easy as to rent a movie from Netflix! It is a mail order service which allows women to rent designer dresses from top designers.
The idea came up when Jen H said she got the idea for the service last year after watching her younger sister agonize over whether to buy an expensive new outfit to wear to a wedding. Her younger sister felt bad for spending so much money all at once. If she spends money on a designer outfit, it would be out of fashion in another week or two. They realized that both of them shared the same problem. They researched and got into contact with the one and only Diane Von Furstenberg (fashion pioneer) who helped them to find dresses and start their business. It also took them some time to convince designers!
I am favour of this concept! How fabulous to have easy access to designer clothes! The rental runs from $50 to $200 for a four night loan and the shipped directly to the customers doorstep.
Many designers like Versace, Velentino, Proenza Schoulder and Micheal Kors have tied up with them.

RTR has been variously been described as 'fad' or 'craze'. The concept of renting a dress has been said to be 'adapting a wannabe attitude'... But it seems to be working for a lot of people!
Many such websites have adapted the idea of renting an outfit.
.... Today, rent a designer fashion websites are a growing fad in London, Paris, USA and other parts of the world. So what do you think?

Oh wow, that sounds awesome! I would totally rent a designer dress. =)
ReplyDeletecool!
ReplyDeletevery interesting!
maybe thats how fashion will b in the future!!!
love ur blog!

@ ChinkyGirlMel- Most middle class people like us (heheh) would be in favour of this alright!
ReplyDelete@Natalia - You're right! xx
Yes, why not?;) If I needed a fancy dress for a fancy occasion, I sure would rent it.;) Hope you are having a great weekend,

it's an interesting idea, but personally, I feel...if i'm going to spend money, I might as well spend it on something i get to keep.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jess. It's a very clever idea and clearly there's a market for it. I just wouldn't be one of them. Then again, I rarely have the chance to dress up. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, belated happy birthday!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's an interesting idea but I think it's not for me because I'm a clumsy girl and if I rent something so expensive, I would worry the whole time I'm wearing it. I wouldn't want it getting ripped, stained, or ruined.
Sounds awesome!

Hi MelRoXx!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog earlier! This idea of renting a designer is great but then being a SAHM now, there's not much chance for me to go for this idea anyway... :P
Oooh, that sounds like such an interesting development!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the comment the other day. Take care, dear!
Wow! I've never heard of this. What a fantastic idea. I'll have to look into this for my next party invite. Thanks for telling us all about it!

That's an amazing service. Kind of like bag, borrow, or steal for dresses.

I absolutely LOVE this idea! How is this not the most popular service in the world right now?!
ReplyDeleteI really think it is such a cool idea! I wish I was smart enough to come up with it! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea. Why not?
ReplyDeleteI like the idea but I don't think I'd try it myself. I would be worried the whole time about spilling something on the dress... and if I'm spending money, I want to be able to get something in return! I'd rather buy something cheaper or save up for a designer item :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea!!!!!! MISS YOU!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWith the price of designer clothes right now, this is a great idea for those less well off.
ReplyDeleteCJ xx
So I hadn't heard of this but have been wishing for this for years. So glad you posted this!
ReplyDeleteyeah that's so cool! What a great idea
ReplyDeleteawesome concept! love it!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea! Who wants to have a $500 dress that you've only worn once just sitting there to gather dust when you can rent one for cheaper!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks for your lovely comments on my blog by the way! I'm glad you enjoy some of my posts :)
xx
Hey thanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteI think this idea is pretty cool....A lot outfits to speacial events you usually can only wear it once but..... when you rent it you don't have to feel the guilt of buying something you know your only going to wear once!
Thanks for your kind comment on my blog!
ReplyDeleteYou rock! :)

ReplyDeleteThis is a neat idea! I don't know that I would use it because I'd be too scared I'd spill something on myself!
ReplyDeleteOh hey Mel, I tagged you at my blog. Do please check it out! :)

Love the idea,btw!
I think it is a great idea! How can you go wrong if it is shipped directly to your doorstep!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
Hi! Nice blog! That does sound like a great idea, but I wonder what happens if the dress doesn't fit or looks terrible when you get it on (always happens to me!). I'd prefer to go to a shop where you can rent, and I'm sure that's possible, at least in London...
ReplyDeleteThis is actually such a great idea. I know I would definitely give it a shot for special occassions.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting concept. Though I don't know how I feel about wearing clothes that dozens of others have worn only because I'm a huge germaphobe, but it seems like a fantastic idea for those that don't suffer from this psychosis.
ReplyDeleteFollowing you back :-).
I just read about this in People Style something-or-other magazine today, what a cool idea! I don't know anyone who could afford to actually buy a designer gown, so I can see a lot of people using this. If they ever made anything in my size (and I had somewhere to wear them, of course) I'd totally check it out.
ReplyDeleteBTW I surfed over from Lady Blogger Tea Party, glad I did :)
This is a brilliant idea, especially for special occasion dresses. I wish this had been around when I was getting married, now I'm stuck with a dress that I spent a fortune on but will never wear again.
